Governance

Officers and Executive Committee

Council

The Council consists of at least 40 members who are elected to four-year terms by members of the Association. The Council meets at the annual meeting of the Association, between meetings discusses critical issues by email, and is additionally consulted by the Executive Committee as needed.

Assembly

The General Assembly meets with during the annual meeting of the Association and is open to all members in good standing who wish to participate.

Committees

Much of the work and planning behind IAVS is conducted by committees. If you are interested in participating in any of these committees, please feel encouraged to contact the committee chair.

Statutes

IAVS is legally incorporated in The Netherlands where its Statutes are formally recorded. These Statutes form the basis for its operation and governance. The original Statues of the Association were adopted at the meeting of the Association (Association Internationale de Phytosociologie, Internationale Vereinigung für Vegetationskunde, International Society for Vegetation Science) during the International Botanical Congress in Paris in 1954. The 1954 Statutes formalized the constitution of the Association at Marseille in 1939 and its postwar reconstitution at Hilversum in 1947. The Statutes were significantly revised by the General Assembly at the meeting in Prague in 1982, and the current Statues were formally adopted by the General Assembly at the annual meeting in Freising in 2001.

Bylaws

The General Assembly establishes Bylaws on topics pertaining to policy and governance that are not sufficiently covered by the Statutes.
