24 August - 26 August: HyspIRI Science Workshop: Earth Science and Applications from Space
Pasadena, CA
Government Rate reservations are now available at the Sheraton Pasadena Hotel, 303 Cordova St., Pasadena, CA 91101,Telephone (626) 449-4000 or 1-800-457-7940 Ask for the Reservations Department, Request the group rate for the HYSPIRI MEETING 2010.
The primary objective of this workshop will be to interact with the broad science community and review the maturing HyspIRI mission concept as called for by the National Research Council in the Decadal Survey: Earth Science and Applications from Space.
The HyspIRI mission includes a global mapping imaging spectrometer and multispectral thermal instrument. The imaging spectrometer delivers complete measurements from 380 to 2500 nm at 10 nm sampling at high SNR for the entire terrestrial and coastal regions of the Earth every 19 days with 60 m sampling. The multispectral thermal instrument measures the same area at the same spatial scale in 8 bands between 3 and 12 microns every 5 days. A real-time direct broadcast of a subset of measurements are provided by the intelligent payload module.
We will review these science measurement characteristics as well as calibration, product generation and validation plans including international collaborations.
A special focus will be given to the contributions of the HyspIRI mission to understanding and constraining uncertainties for global climate change research. Some topics include:
1) Global vegetation species-type and physiological condition, including agricultural lands, for biosphere feedback and land-atmosphere interactions;
2) Spectroscopically derived terrestrial land cover composition/albedo including snow, ice, dust climate interaction;
3) Fire: fuel, occurrence, intensity and recovery globally, as well as volcano emissions;
4) Fine spatial & temporal scale measures of surface temperature and energy balance, including urban heat Islands;
5) Incorporation of HyspIRI measurements and derived products into climate and biosphere models.
In this workshop, we will include presentation of new science results with HyspIRI related precursor measurements.
At this time we would like to solicit contributions from you of science results (from both the US and international community) for oral and poster presentations at this HyspIRI science workshop.
If you would like to give a science presentation at the workshop, please e-mail the title and short description to Robert.O.Green@jpl.nasa.gov or Simon.J.Hook@jpl.nasa.gov.
Additional details on the workshop as well as workshop registration and hotel information will be available on the HyspIRI Website:

The reports from the 1st and 2nd HyspIRI Science workshops are now on the website as well.
Inquiries about the HyspIRI Science Workshop should be directed to either Robert Green or Simon Hook.

22 October - 23 October: Cracks in the Concrete Jungle: New Perspectives on Urban Ecology
Berlin, DU
he DFG Graduate Research Group announces the final International Congress on Urban Ecology on October 22nd and 23rd in Berlin.
For the past seven years, the DFG graduate research group "Perspectives on Urban Ecology" has been investigating the interface between cities, nature and people, and is pleased to invite representatives from different disciplines to its third and final international congress on urban ecology. The congress focuses on the development of urban nature in the context of contemporary challenges, especially with regard to the quality of human life.
We look forward to receive abstracts for oral presentations and poster contributions on the following session topics:
Sustainable Planning and Policy
Urban Biodiversity
Environmental Media
Perception and Behavior
Methods, Theories and Practice
