Announcements of the EDGG working group

The Eurasian Dry Grassland Group (EDGG) of the IAVS announces the 20th Eurasian Grassland Conference, which will be held at the University of Oulu, Finland, from 7-10th July 2025. The theme of the conference will focus on the peculiarities of the grasslands of this region, and other regions with extreme conditions. During the mid-conference excursion, participants will visit unique Baltic grasslands along the Bothnian Bay. The post-conference excursion will take us to see riparian flood meadows along the Oulanka river, in the Oulanka National Park in NE Finland, where we will stay from 11-13th July, at the Oulanka Research Station of Oulu University.

In 2025, two EDGG Field Workshops will also take place. The 20th EDGG Field Workshop “Dry Grasslands of the Maritime and Ligurian Alps” (28th May – 5th June 2025) will focus on sampling the most marginal part of the southwestern Alps, in the Italian Maritime Alps (Valle Maira, Valle Stura, Valle Gesso), and the Ligurian Alps (Valle Tanaro), which host the most thermophilic refuge areas and thus show the highest plant diversity and endemicity rate of the Alps.

The 21st EDGG Field Workshop “Diversity of Grasslands and Open Habitats in the Turku Archipelago” (28th June – 6th July 2025) will focus on detailed sampling in diverse types of grasslands and open habitats including the following: semi-natural pastures, rocky dry grasslands, sandy grasslands, coastal meadows, wooded pastures and meadows, and heathlands of southwestern Finland.

The EDGG Field Workshops are research expeditions dedicated to the acquisition of high-quality data on Palaearctic non-forest vegetation types, following a standardized methodology. Participants will engage in vegetation-plot sampling, documenting all encountered vascular plant, bryophyte, and lichen species, as well as key structural and environmental parameters.

The annual Symposium of the IAVS 2024will be held in Funchal, Madeira island, Portugal. An important simultaneous event is the Conference of the European Vegetation Survey (EVS), an autonomous working group within the IAVS. The site of the symposium has been now launched and is available at:

Dear IAVS members,

On 26-30.08.2024, there will be a European restoration ecology conference in Tartu, Estonia organised by the European Chapter of the Society for Ecological Restoration (SERE). The conference sessions will cover topics ranging from the theory and practice of restoring various ecosystems (wetlands, grasslands, forests, rivers, agroecosystems, urban and marine ecosystems) to the socioeconomic and political contexts of ecological restoration. The conference program includes different workshops and field trips to Estonian restoration areas.

Registration and abstract submission will open on the 10th of February 2024. The most up-to-date information about SERE2024 can be found on our website http://sere2024.org and Twitter feed @SER_Europe.

The organizers are looking forward to meeting many EDGG members in the interesting scientific sessions and show the flora, fauna, natural beauties and conservation challenges related to the diverse grassland habitats of the Hungarian Great Plain during the mid-conference and post-conference excursions.

The 65th Annual Symposium of the International Association for Vegetation Science – IAVS 2023 – will be held from Sunday 3rd to Friday 8th September 2023 at Opal Cove, Coffs Harbour, New South Wales, Australia. Opal Cove is a beachside resort on the Pacific Ocean with an enviable subtropical maritime climate. The Gumbaynggirr are the original people of the Coffs Harbour region.

Coffs Harbour, on the East Coast of Australia between Sydney and Brisbane, is a tranquil seaside nature destination for visitors and tourists. It is surrounded by World Heritage-listed national parks and state forests, as well as a marine park. The weather in Coffs Harbour is humid subtropical. September has a comfortable mean daily maximum and minimum of 22°C and 11°C, respectively, and is normally relatively dry, with monthly rainfall averaging 60 mm.

The symposium theme is ‘The Future of Vegetation in the 22ndCentury’. Given the stark manifestations of climate change in recent years, both globally and in Australia, IAVS2023 presents an important opportunity for the world’s vegetation scientists to meet, take stock of recent events and recalibrate predictions about the prospects for the world’s vegetation by the22nd century.
