Eurasian Dry Grassland Group (EDGG)

The Eurasian Dry Grassland Group (EDGG) is the home to researchers and conservationists interested in fauna, flora, vegetation, conservation, restoration and land management of any type of natural and semi-natural grasslands of the Palaearctic biogeographic realm. The core aims of the EDGG are to

  • develop and advance research on any aspect of Palaearctic grasslands,
  • promote education on Palaearctic grasslands,
  • promote the publication of research results on Palaearctic grasslands,
  • facilitate scientific and personal communication among scientists who are interested in Palaearctic grasslands,
  • promote appropriate application of research in Palaearctic grasslands for the good of society, particularly in environmental management and public decision making, and
  • promote policies and legislation towards protection, proper management, and restoration of Palaearctic grasslands.

To achieve these aims, EDGG organizes the Eurasian Grassland Conferences (EGCs) and the EDGG Field Workshops on an annual basis as well as the Talk Grassland! online series of presentations during winter terms. EDGG publishes its own diamond open access journal “Palaearctic Grasslands” with peer-reviewed scientific articles, beautiful photos, news and announcement as well as numerous Special Features in international journals. EDGG has its own vegetation-plot database “GrassPlot” with high-quality multi-scale vegetation plots from Palaearctic non-forest habitats.


Founded in 2008, the EDGG Working Group counts today 1340 members from 64 different countries
